LILI by Michelle Lane is intelligent, graceful and uplifting. It's also disturbing, probing and alarming. It delves into the young mind of a teenage girl who is being bullied, both to her face and electronically.I've always been intrigued by identity and the cost of bullying. It's a theme that pops up in my own work as well. LILI tackles these topics head-on and with resolute gravity. I came to care for LILI, wanting so badly to protect her and yell at her antagonists. I also rooted for her as she formed her sense of self and fought back in a way that is modern and heartfelt.
Now I'm the farthest you can get from a teenage girl, but even as I look back at my high school years from the much more confident perch of adulthood, the wounds of being bullied can be easily pulled to the surface. I have to say, the bullying I endured was of ridicule and physical stabs because I was quiet, meek and all-around geeky. Still am, but none of those qualities are weaknesses to me now. When I was sixteen, they sure felt like they hampered me instead of defining and empowering me.
LILI is aided in her quest to obtain self-assurance by her grandmother and close friend. The relationships in the book ring true and the author plies with knowing confidence all the conventions of all the modern tech the teens of today subject themselves to on a daily basis.
Electronic bullying removes accountability and ownership of one's words. It's bullying territory my generation never had to face. This book let's young readers see the toll of what those 140 callous characters can cause. Online postings can be seen as fleeting and intangible, but they linger and fester much like graffiti on a bathroom stall that can never be erased.
The author drapes the characters in realistic interests and aspirations. The dialogue rings true. Although, the way some of the boys talk to LILI is depressing and made me angry that anyone would treat someone with such disrespect and malice. But that's also exactly what bullying does.
What I like about this book is the conversation it can provoke among its YA readership and among parents of the same.
It's positive and legitimate. I hope LILI is snatched up for your bookshelf right away.

Lili Michelle Lane 9780963110527 Books Reviews
Great book, held my interest throughout. loved the relationships as they evolved through Lili's trials and tribulations. There is a sense or urgency to hurry along to see how Lili deals with her sometimes frightening situations. Lili's relationship with Sophie and her Grand mere are just fantastic. It is easy to become emotionally involved as Lili is confronted with situations that are just too common these days.
The theme is timely, the characters very believable and the relationships, family, friends, social and academic are very well developed.
This book could easily be discussed in grand ma's book club, classrooms and families.
This is a powerful and gripping story told artfully and passionately by a talented new author. Through Lili's angst and struggles, we get a stark glimpse into being subjected to bullying, inappropriate touching (also known as sexual abuse), and vicious gossip. We want so badly for Lili to stand up for herself, to understand her unique artistic talents, and to stop blaming herself for the horrid actions and behavior of a few bad apples. Her non-judgmental best friend, her beautiful and successful Grand-mere, and a few new allies join Lili on a fantastic voyage of resolution to recover who she really is and to discover just how important her family and friends are to her.
Ms. Lane perfectly captured those hellish days of pubescence, and delivered her anti-bullying message in an entertaining and enlightening manner. This book will capture you and won't allow you to put it down until you reach the dynamic ending.
Absolutely a must-read for all teens, boys and girls alike, and all adults who interact with them... parents, grandparents, teachers, counselors, clergy, or any grown-up who has a close relationship with a pre-teen or teenager. Looking forward to more of Michelle Lane and her wonderful story-telling talents!
Where do I begin.... First, I rarely read books for the "young adult" market. Perhaps I should more often, as I was moved to "tears of happiness" several times during this powerful novel, something that also rarely happens from a book. Whether intentional or not, the author takes her time before the really powerful part of this story emerges. It's "interesting" reading for the first several chapters or so in which we are introduced to and get to know the characters. But then, at somewhere around a 1/3 of the way through the book... WHAM! We're hit in the gut with an amazing event that will have you cheering and wiping away the tears as Lili's path toward revenge and rising self-esteem kicks in. Then another amazing event takes place... and another... and another, until by the last 1/3 of the book you simply won't be able to put it down. When Ms. Lane gives us a peek at how Lili is going to resolve her major dilemma you can't WAIT to get there with her to read all about it. What a GREAT book!!! As another reviewer has already indicated, LILI should be "required reading" for every middle school and high school student, and it should be part of every middle school curriculum. Perhaps if those disgraceful kids on their infamous school bus had read this book they might not have treated that grandmother so shabbily. Bullying and taunting has always been around, and now, through the easy access to the Internet and Email, hurtful gossip and falsehoods have become much easier to create and perpetuate, INSTANTLY, through the clatter of a few keys and the push of a button. If all kids, and their parents, would read this book (and they SHOULD) perhaps it could help contain and hopefully even stop some of these kinds of devastating actions.
CONGRATULATIONS to this remarkable new author! This book should be read required reading in classrooms everywhere, and also made into a movie. It would make some producer a TON of money! DO NOT MISS THIS WONDERFUL BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
